Targets receive texts, emails, or calls from individuals posing as representatives of major exchanges or wallet providers, such as Coinbase or Ledger, claiming that their accounts have been compromised. These communications often direct users to fraudulent websites designed to harvest login credentials, passwords, and recovery phrases. Some messages even provide a “help” phone number, which connects directly to the scammer. Impersonation scams are a big problem in the crypto space, and according to James, criminals have begun sending physical letters that mimic official correspondence from wallet manufacturers, complete with QR codes intended to lure recipients into compromising their accounts. False Promises of Cryptocurrency Giveaways Another recurring scam involves fraudulent giveaways. James emphasized that Ripple will never distribute XRP for free in exchange for deposits or payments. Scammers often promote these schemes through fake social media accounts or impersonations of public figures, misleading victims into sending cryptocurrency or cash to unverified wallets. Some offer unsolicited assistance to gain trust. James advises verifying identities independently and remaining “very cautious” online. The rule also emphasized that Self-custody wallets require strict security . Seed or recovery phrases, whether 12 or 24 words, must never be shared as wallets cannot be recovered once compromised. Maintaining vigilance is essential. He advised crypto holders to ignore unknown calls, delete suspicious texts, and avoid clicking links or scanning QR codes from unverified sources.
