Tether to End Support for USDT on Five Blockchains by September

2 min read

Tether, the company behind popular stablecoin USDT, has announced that it will stop supporting the digital asset on five older blockchains. These platforms include Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, now called Vaulta, and Algorand. This decision will start fully on September 1, 2025. After that date, people will no longer be able to redeem USDT on those five blockchains, and any tokens left there will be frozen. Tether Adjusts to Shifting Usage Trends The company described this move as part of an “infrastructure optimization” strategy. According to the announcement made on July 11, the aim is to align with changing user behavior. At the same time, shift the focus toward blockchains that are more active and scalable. Over the past two years, Tether had already begun gradually pulling away from these networks. In 2023, it stopped creating new USDT tokens on Bitcoin Cash, Kusama, and Omni Layer. While minting on Algorand and EOS ended in June 2024. However, until now, redemptions had still been allowed. Starting September 1, Tether will no longer redeem USDT on these blockchains, and any tokens left will be frozen. A Shift Toward Growth and Scalability In a recent statement, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said that as the digital asset ecosystem changes, the company is committed to evolving with it. He explained that ending support for these older blockchains allows Tether to focus on platforms with better scalability and stronger developer involvement. Meanwhile, these five blockchains being phased out played a key role in Tether’s early days. However, USDT usage on them has dropped a lot in recent years. Now, Tether wants to spend more time and resources on blockchains that can grow with the future of crypto. This move follows a broader industry trend. In 2024, Circle stopped minting USDC on Tron as part of a company-wide decision involving its business and compliance teams. Tether Urges Users To Act Fast Before Slated Deadline Tether is asking users who still have USDT on the affected blockchains to take action before September. They can either redeem their tokens through the platform or move them to other blockchains that Tether still supports. If a user is not using Tether directly, they can use trusted third-party services to help move their tokens. If nothing is done before the deadline, the tokens will be frozen and can’t be used anymore. Tether also said it will now focus more on faster, modern blockchains like the Lightning Network. These new systems will help USDT stay quick, safe , and easy to use as the crypto world keeps changing. The company added that it will keep building new partnerships and using better technology to make USDT more available for people all over the world.
