U.S. Military Divisions Reportedly Support Bitcoin Reserve: Details

2 min read

U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis has revealed that certain divisions of the American military—particularly those stationed in Southeast Asia—are backing the idea of establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve . In a June 3 interview with Bloomberg, Lummis said the idea is gaining traction among military leadership concerned with the increasing risk of economic warfare, especially involving China. “All we need to do is look to the leadership of the current U.S. military to find support for a strategic Bitcoin reserve,” said Lummis. She emphasized that several generals believe BTC could serve as a critical hedge in both economic and potential military conflicts. “There are generals, especially in Southeast Asia, who believe it’s important to have a strategic Bitcoin stockpile because we’re doing an economic war with China and we have to prepare for a guns and bullets war. But we need both.” Bitcoin as a Geopolitical Tool The senator’s comments come at a time of renewed focus on the U.S.–China relationship, particularly after the trade wars initiated during the Trump administration. While many of Trump’s tariffs were lifted or paused, those against China remained largely intact. The economic rivalry between the two nations has only deepened since, and now appears to include a new digital front. China banned all crypto-related activities in 2021, including Bitcoin trading and mining, but continues to develop and promote its blockchain-based digital yuan for domestic and international use. In contrast, the U.S. remains divided on its regulatory approach to cryptocurrencies, although political momentum appears to be building in BTC’s favor. Crypto in U.S. Election Campaigns President Donald Trump has promised to make the U.S. “the world capital of crypto,” warning that if America does not take the lead, China or another power will. Trump’s stance aligns with broader calls from U.S. officials for strategic adoption of decentralized technologies. On May 28, U.S. Vice President JD Vance spoke at Bitcoin 2025 , underscoring the geopolitical significance of digital assets. He argued that maintaining leadership in crypto innovation is essential for preserving the nation’s global economic edge. Together, the growing military and political interest in Bitcoin signals a shift toward integrating crypto into national defense and economic policy strategies.
